Nigel M Cumberbatch
Director of Academics & Training

Nigel Cumberbatch is a Chief Aircraft Dispatcher and Dispatcher Instructor with American Airlines, bringing decades (42 years) of operational and instructional experience across multiple sectors of aviation. His passion for aviation was sparked in his youth in Guyana, following conversations with high school friends who were Air Traffic Control trainees. That early inspiration led to his formal entry into the field when he was awarded a Government of Guyana scholarship to study Air Traffic Control in Canada as part of a regional Caribbean cohort.

Mr. Cumberbatch began his professional career as an Air Traffic Controller with the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority, where he was responsible for the safe separation of aircraft and the delivery of critical safety information within Guyana’s airspace. His experience later expanded to airport management and commercial operations, including service as Duty Manager at Cheddi Jagan International Airport and as a Passenger Service Agent with Pan Am and Saudi Arabian Airlines.

He is an FAA-licensed Aircraft Dispatcher who served with US Airways from 1992 to 2015 and continued his career with American Airlines following the 2015 merger of the two carriers. In his current role, he exercises joint operational control with the Pilot in Command, planning, authorizing, and monitoring domestic and international flights to ensure safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance. His responsibilities include flight planning, fuel calculations, meteorological analysis, route optimization, and real-time operational decision-making, including the authority to delay, divert, or cancel flights when conditions warrant.

As an Instructor, Mr. Cumberbatch trains American Airlines dispatchers in FAA-approved and company-specific programs, covering regulations, meteorology, navigation, flight planning, and safety management systems. His instructional focus ensures dispatchers are fully prepared to manage complex aircraft operations with confidence and precision.

Mr. Cumberbatch, as a team member of the West Indies Institute of Navigation & Ground Studies (WINGS), is committed to delivering world-class aviation education rooted in discipline, technical excellence, and innovation. Through this work, he supports WINGS’ vision of becoming the premier aviation academy in Guyana and the Caribbean, developing aviation professionals who will lead across Guyana, the region, and the global aviation industry.
